India’s silicon valley faces e-waste hazards

Most of the inhabitants of Bangalore, over six million of them, are facing the perils of waste disposed in the hi-tech capital of India. More than 1,200 foreign and domestic technology companies operate from the city.

An electronic crematorium has been set up to recycle this enormous amount of electronic junk. According to a recent estimate, almost 1,000 tons of plastics, 300 tons of lead, 0.23 tons of mercury, 43 tons of nickel and 350 tons of copper are annually generated in Bangalore. More than 300 small industrial units operate here in metal extraction waste from dumped computers.

Preventive measures like raising awareness among school children are already being undertaken. The Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT), the association of India's hardware manufactures has persuaded the government in Delhi to set up a federal agency to handle waste disposal.
