EU Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding recently announced the 'i2010' strategy plan, EU’s new ICT plan at the Microsoft's Government Leaders Forum in Prague. 'i2010' is set to replace the earlier 'e-Europe 2005' action plan.
This action plan envisages the idea of creating a "borderless European information space". It will enable seamless convergence between internet, telephone and TV while increasing competitions among the major service providers. "The use of the internet to provide voice telephony (VoIP) and television will revolutionise the way in which we communicate," said Reding.
Providing wider access to the information society, especially to the disabled and the elderly, is one of the key goals of i2010. This is set to become one of the Commission's new flagship programmes to support the new Lisbon Strategy.
