Tunisias engagement in the WSIS process will help the country in curbing its tradition of oppressing communication rights, remarked Sihem Bensedrine in the World Social Forum. Bensedrine of National Council for Tunisian Freedom was speaking at a panel discussion on communication rights organized by the Communication Rights in the Information Society in WSF.
Since 1991, Tunisia is witnessing the closure of all independent newspapers as the new regime came to power. Even Internet forums have been prohibited and one webmaster was put in jail because he moderated an unauthorised online forum.
Bensedrine believes that the organisation of the second phase of the WSIS in Tunisia in November will raise awareness among Tunisian people and make them aware of their right to communicate.
