Global Alliance for ICT proposed to succeed UN ICT Taskforce

The Global Alliance for ICT is proposed to be the successor of the United Nations Information and Communications Technology Task Force (UNICT Task Force), a UN sponsored multistakeholder network mandated to raise policy-maker awareness and understanding on ICT development potential.

As public participation in global policy discourse largely depend on the availability of knowledge, the importance of internet as the virtual repository of knowledge has long been recognised. Internet is also advantageous as a relatively interactive media for exchange of information, compared to the traditional print media.

The UN ICT Taskforce has succeeded in tapping this potential of internet, providing a multi-stakeholder approach in policy discussions. The Taskforce, however, has failed to capitalise on the possibilities of virtual collaboration.

The proposed Global Alliance captures the vision of a virtual collaboratory allowing a large number of stakeholders participate in the policy dialogue.
