APC South/Southeast Asia SecureComputing and Online Communications Train-the Trainer Workshop
The Train-the Trainer Workshop is targeted at information and communication technologies (ICTs) trainers from South/South East Asia, and aims to:

Raise ICTs trainers' awareness of issues relating to secure computing and online communications in general and in high risk contexts.

Develop ICTs trainers' skills in tools which support secure computing and online communications.
-
Develop ICTs trainers' skills in curriculum development and capacity building around secure computing and online communications.
The workshop is being organized by the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) with the support of the Open Society Institute. It will take place in Manila, Philippines, 20 - 24 May 2005.
Background
As Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) around the world make increasing use of online technologies there is a corresponding increase in the need for skills and knowledge to ensure that the use of ICTs is both effective and secure. It is precisely as CSOs become more dependent on ICTs in their work that they are at their most vulnerable. This vulnerability is especially acute in the case of CSOs operating in high risks contexts such as
repressive political conditions and situations of conflict. Threats range from the general--such as vulnerability to malware and data loss due to poor "computer housekeeping"--to direct surveillance.
This initiative seeks to promote an informed culture of secure online communications in CSOs in South/South East Asia, particularly among those working in high risk contexts, by building the capacity of trainers who work with these organizations.
Workshop Content
The workshop will cover the broad areas listed below. The final programme will be fine-tuned in line with the skills and needs of participants.

Overview of issues in secure computing and online communications (e.g. viruses and other malware, access control, data security, online security).

Secure computing and online communications in high risk contexts: issues and tools (e.g. the Martus secure online reporting tool).
-
Tools to support secure computing and online communications.
-
Strategic technology planning for secure computing and online
-
communications.
-
Effective capacity building approaches to secure computing and online communications.
Who can apply
This workshop is aimed at ICTs *trainers* from South/South East Asia.
Participants will be expected to
-
Have experience as ICTs trainers.
-
Have good general ICTs skills.
-
Be employed by or working closely with civil society organizations or networks.
Applications from all South/South East Asia countries will be considered, but trainers from Bangladesh, Burma, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam are particularly encouraged to apply.
Travel and accomodation costs
The cost of travel, accommodation and meals will be covered for successful applicants.
