Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced the constitution of a National Knowledge Commission to be headed by tech czar Sam Pitroda.
The Commission is entrusted with the task of advising Indian Government on matters relating to institutions of knowledge production, knowledge use and knowledge dissemination.
The eight-member commission will have P M Bhargava as the vice-chairperson. Other members include Nandan Nilekani of Infosys, educationists Deepak Nayyar, Ashok Ganguly, Andre Beteille, Jayanti Ghosh and Pratap Bhanu Mehta, an official release said.
Official sources said that the Commission would determine its plan of action by October 2 this year and complete its work by October 2, 2008.
A Technical Support Group will be put in place to assist the Commission's work, while the Planning Commission would provide logistic support.
The Commission will coordinate with different ministries that cultivate knowledge in various domains.
