UN body releases Asia-Pacific policy input on internet governance to WSIS

“Voices from Asia-Pacific: Internet governance priorities and recommendations” is the result of UNDP-APDIP's ten-month long Open Regional Dialogue on Internet Governance (ORDIG) initiative for assessing concerns and opinions on internet governance issues in the Asia-Pacific region through a broad research and consultation process.

The Reports contains the ORDIG Policy Brief and Executive Summary, and the ORDIG Input Paper for the UN Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG) and the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

ORDIG undertook a stakeholder consultation involving more than 3000 institutions – public, private and the civil society organisations - through sub-regional meetings, jointly organised with UNESCAP and others; a region-wide online forum for discussions on the issues; and a region-wide, multi-lingual, issues-based online survey that looked at the Internet governance priorities of the region.

“Voices from Asia-Pacific: Internet governance priorities and recommendations” documents the principles and dimensions related to Infrastructure dimension that includes access costs, VOIP, and wireless networks.

Issues and recommendations covered in the Logical dimension include DNS management, IP address management, and technical standards. Issues covered in the Content dimension are content pollution (spam, viruses, spyware, etc.) and cybercrime. Issues covered in the Social/Developmental dimension are cultural diversity and participation.

ORDIG outcome has been shared with and endorsed by delegates at the High Level Asia-Pacific Conference for the World Summit on the Information Society, in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran (31 May-2 June 2005). It will further be provided to the WGIG at their upcoming Fourth Meeting (14-17 June 2005), as the the Asia-Pacific input for the Working Group's consultation.
