In an effort to address insurmountable educational challenges and in order to give Namibia the edge on the global information technology arena, the Ministry of Education has unveiled its Information and Communication Technology Policy.
Although good progress has been made in education in terms of ICT development, 78 000 computers or PCs are needed countrywide at schools. There are other pressing challenges that need to be addressed by implementing the new ICT Policy.
In addition, the lack of infrastructure at some schools particularly in rural areas makes progress a difficult process for both learners and teachers.
At the launch of the ICT Policy, Prime Minister Nahas Angula encouraged both teachers and learners to transform this policy into a workable programme for the benefit of the education sector. This in turn would help all Namibians to achieve their objectives stipulated in the economic blueprint Vision 2030.
Learners must master the use of ICT as well as the technology and language of ICT. The use of ICT will enable learners to use it as a resource for learning. Teachers on their part will use ICT as a resource for teaching and communication, said Angula.
An ICT environment would help create a potential for jobs for many of the countrys young people, he noted.
