Nepal government asks FM Radio stations to broadcast as per law

The attention of the Ministry of Information and Communications has been drawn towards the press statement of the Independent Radio Protection Movement issued on Tuesday in connection with the problems that have surfaced regarding the operation of radio stations run under frequency modulation (FM).

The ministry has always stressed the need to find a way out of such problems through dialogue. It would once again wish to reaffirm its commitment to address the problems through mutual dialogue, a press statement of the ministry said.

The ministry would wish to clarify that it is ever prepared to assist the radios to broadcast programmes other than news by remaining within the parameters of the existing laws, conditions spelt out in the radio license and the legal notices issued from time to time.

The ministry hence would like to request all radio operators to run their programmes by abiding with the existing laws. Meanwhile RSS reports that, the Ministry of Information and Communications has, by exercising the authority given by the National Broadcasting Regulations-2052 BS, specified the conditions for prohibiting the Frequency Modulation (FM) broadcasting institutions or persons from broadcasting news-based programmes or materials except purely entertainment programmes and materials.

The Ministry has stated that if any institution or person is found to have broadcast against the conditions specified for such prohibitions, their license would be revoked and they would be liable for punishment as per the national broadcasting act-2049 BS.
