Giving a boost to the rural telephony, the Minister for Communications and IT, Dayanidhi Maran announced the ministrys One India plan. Under this plan there will be uniform tariff for all calls irrespective of the distance.
Currently the tariffs are different for local and STD calls based on the distance of the calls. The tariff rate under the new plan will be based on call duration rather than the distance slab. This will reduce the telephone bills significantly.
However, certain hurdles are to be overcome before this plan can be implemented. Operators need to work out the inter-connect pacts for smooth handover of calls among the operators. Also the access deficit charges regime has to be discontinued for the improved performance of the operators.
