UNESCO supported infokiosks in Uganda win Scoop Awards
Two community multimedia centres in Uganda supported by UNESCO won the best dramatic program and the best participatory programming on the UNICEF Children's Broadcasting Day Awards which had attracted entries
from a number of both commercial and community radios.
The basis of selection was making program on children built on
specific theme (under the directorship of the radio managers). These community radio program are slowly becoming the dominant tool to promote developmental issues in various communities.
UNESCO established a multipurpose telecentre at the Apac community radio station and established the radio station at Nabweru's community telecentre last year. Winning the award evinced that mobilising and participatory processes were already very well developed by the telecentre`commented by the UNESCO project officer.
UNESCO's strategy for CMC development is to build on existing,
dynamic community structures to ensure that they can offer a broad platform of communication and informatio n services for development, based on both new and traditional technologies.
