What seems to be an apparent measure to boost the revenue from the mobile phone business, the government of Bangladesh has decided to impose a new duty on Subscribers Identification Module (SIM) effective from July in the proposed new budget.
However, Tax on handset has been reduced by the same amount to balance the duty on SIM. It seems that the cost of the mobile phones is not going to change neither the numbers of users will decrease. In last years budget the government has imposed a tax on handsets but failed to collect the desired amount of revenue due to smuggling of handsets and tax evasion.
