UNESCO to launch pilot tsunami warning system

The recent meeting of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO foresees commissioning the tsunami warning system for the Indian ocean region by July next year.

The UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Assembly in its 38th Session being held from June 20 - 30 in Paris has already decided to launch an Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System soon.

The Assembly serves as the IOC decision-making body comprising 131 IOC member States. IOC also plans to establish an intergovernmental coordination group (ICG) to govern it, according to a UNESCO press release here.
