With a vision to provide management and integration of global information on genetic resources and crop improvement for any crop, the International Crop Information system (ICIS) initiative was started.
It is a database system for the management and integration of global information on genetic resources and crop improvement for any crop. Ambiguous germplasm identification, difficulty in tracing pedigree information, lack of integration between genetic resources, breeding, characterisation, evaluation, and utilisation of data have been identified as major constraints in developing knowledge intensive crop improvement programs.
ICIS is being developed by genetic resource specialists, crop scientist, and information technicians in several centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS), and other agricultural research institutes (ARIs) to address these constraints.
