UNESCO supported documentary wins the international tv festival award

"Nomadic Village” presented by the Office of Radio Television of Niger-Télé-Sahel and directed by Mahaman Souleymane was awarded the bronze medal at URTI’s International Grand Prix for Documentaries. An “honest and magnificent film” according to the international jury, the documentary tells the story of a farmer and his small village fighting against the advancing desert.

Nomadic Village is "a film of every time, which through magnificence of the images, the nobility of the characters and the universal wandering, testifies for the men among the most deprived of the planet", judges the Jury. The films was produced within the framework of the project "Ecosystems and Environment" launched by the International Radio and TV University (URTI) with support from UNESCO and some other professional organisations

URTI is producing a series of documentaries on major environmental issues in cooperation with UNESCO, the International Council of French-speaking radios and televisions (CIRTEF), RTBF, CFI and France televisions as well as national television channels of Mali, Senegal and Benin.

The Grand Prix was awarded to the film “Writor of O” produced by Pola Rapaport and presented by the French National Audiovisual Institute (INA), coproduced with ARTE France – Blinding Light, and with participation of YLE, VRT and RTBF.

The Silver medal was given to “Il Fare Politica: Chronicle of the Red Toscane (1982-2004)” directed by Hugues Le Paige and coproduced by Dérives – Lapsus – RTBF – ARTE.

Algerian documentary “OAS” by Ali Fateh Ayadi in which “the Algerian people tell their own history, without taboos and without make-up, freely” received a special mention.

Both “Nomadic Village” and “OAS” will be included in UNESCO's Audiovisual E-Platform, which provides global on-line contact between filmmakers, broadcasters and distribution outlets, enhancing the promotion and distribution of culturally diverse audiovisual content.

URTI was created in 1949 by the French Broadcasting Corporation and UNESCO and like CIRTEF has formal consultative relations with UNESCO.
