Village resource centre opens in Coimbatore

President A P J Abdul Kalam launched the Amrita-ISRO Village Resource Centre (VRC), an innovative project for rural development utilising satellite technology, at the Amrita University campus at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.

The project visualises the concept of ''Self Reliant Village'' by creating and implementing a sustainable space technology-supported community based infrastructure.

This would include various satellite-linked teleservices like tele- consultation, tele-agriculture, tele-fisheries; entrepreneurship development, disaster management and emergency response system being made available through the VRC. Quality education could also be delivered to the remotest of villages with the help of the recently launched edusat.

The VRC network would link seven rural centres in Kerala and three in Tamil Nadu with an additional 15 locations to be linked in its subsequent phase.
