Hewlett-Packard's Mogalakwena i-community programme aims to develop the Limpopo Province in South Africa into a self-sustaining economy by providing access to ICTs for improving livelihoods opportunities of the population by raising literacy rates, creating income, providing access to government services, education and health care, and opening new markets.
The public-private partnership aims to develop the local economy by:

Sustainable IT and communications infrastructure;

Self-sustaining new job/income opportunities;

Profitable revenue streams by providing access to new markets;

Appropriate technology innovations and replicable business models;

Leadership and capacity within the community;

Self-sustaining and scalable demand models, as well as business models that are replicable.
The South African I-community programme has undertaken innovative approaches to spread ICT usage within the target audience. Through initiatives like community computer camp (C3), advanced PC and application training, PC refurbishment, business resource centre, call centre training and open source centre, the project has been able to create employment and generate sustainable livelihoods options for the local communities.
