Africa receives computer aid from developed countries

Computer Aid International is donating computers from developed countries to developing countries, from London for example, to various states in Africa are used to provide education and other facilities to the people who otherwise cannot afford a computer. Only selected highest specification machines that would continue working for another three or four years are provide to organisations overseas. Training and other technical support is also provided to make sure every computer is made productive use of. Since Computer Aid started, more than 40,000 second-hand computers have been sent to African nations. African charities then take on a supervisory role, promising to maintain the PCs and teach others how to use them. Many end up in outlying areas like Kilgoris in Kenya, as special school charity. The recent computerization of the kilgori secondary school is an accomplishment, which has led to migration of students from schools without computers. Pupils can learn office software, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, thanks to the newly launched programme. In terms of employment learning computer skills is a boon. Despite the high adult literacy rate in Kenya, unemployment here is high. However, it becomes comparatively easier to get employment after high school with computer knowledge. At Nairobi's YMCA anyone can enrol for cut-price lessons on these imported second-hand computers. After-school computer lessons and clubs, which use the newly arrived PCs, are proving popular. It has left many believing they can get a vital edge by pinning their hopes on these new skills. More
