Government of India to double teledensity in two years

The government aims to double tele-density by strengthening the subscriber base to 100 million lines in the next two years.

Union minister of state for communication and information technology, Shakeel Ahmed said that internet and broadband access can be recognised as catalysts for economic and social development. However, nationwide broadband access comes with high fixed costs so the availability of broadband has lagged behind, especially in developing countries.

Other problems are faced are coding of major scripts into computer format and also for scripts used in the uniform resource locator (URL), network security is for developing broadband facilities, particularly in the context of e-commerce.

At the Asia-Pacific Conference on Telecommunication and Information in Goa, along with discussing the barriers to telecommunication and ICT development in the Asia Pacific region other issues were also addressed which included global and regional initiative on telecom and ICT development, private sector and research initiative on broadband facilities, application and preparation for the WTDC-06 and the poor computer literacy rates in both rural and urban areas.
