Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has launched online services to rural areas through the Rajiv Internet Village Centres . Under the project, it is proposed to set up 8,618 centres across Andhra Pradesh.
The project, which was conceived on the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi last year, seeks to offer online services to citizens at their doorstep, broadband connectivity to every village at an affordable price and impart computer literacy to at least one member of a family.
Described as a major e-governance initiative of the State Government, the project was awarded to two technology partners--M/s TIMES, a non-governmental organisation, and M/s Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) with a total investment of Rs.135 crores. The partners are assured of delivery of several Government-to-Citizen (G2C) services through the centres for three years. They would pay the Government Rs.5.17 crores a year.
About 150 of the centres commenced operations in the State on 21 August-64 (Mahabubnagar), 30 (Ranga Reddy), 21(Srikakulam), 18 (Vizianagaram), 13 (Visakhapatnam) and three (Nalgonda). In Medak, they plan to set up 345 centres of which the Bhurgupally centre has been inaugrated.
