Call for Indian bureaucracy to go paperless

Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has asked the bureaucracy to swiftly switch over to paperless working processes.

Dr Singh has appointed a five-member committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary BK Chaturvedi to look into speeding up the development and implementation of IT-enabled government.

The committee has been asked to present its report to the Prime Minister’s Office by February 2006 ahead of the presentation of union budget.

The Prime Minister has set his sights on achieving a paperless budget by 2008, with the central government budgeting to be full computerised. Part of the responsibilities of the new committee are to create a supportive legislative environment for the changes.
