International Forum on Local Cultural Expression and Communication
An International Forum on Local Cultural Expression and Communication, organized by UNESCO, starts today in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). It will address issues such as safeguarding endangered cultures through communication, producing local content as an expression of cultural diversity as well as promoting communication policies with an emphasis on cultural diversity, freedom of expression and local content.
Debates about communication strategies for cultural expression and intercultural dialogue, the global trends in local content production and dissemination, as well as screenings of challenging productions made by, for and about indigenous peoples will dominate the programme of the forum.
Some one hundred prominent personalities, academics and communication and cultural science specialists from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin and North America and the Pacific will participate in this four-day event.
Indigenous leaders, Sami and Pygmy journalists, Dayak, Aymara, San, Maasai, Maya, Inuit and Quechua experts, anthropologists, film-makers, media specialists and analysts representing alternative communication models and channels, as well as representatives of broadcasting authorities and national structures will all contribute to this collective effort that should conclude with the adoption of a Plan of Action for the next two years.
This event is hosted by the Ministries of Culture, Education and Tourism of the Dominican Republic.
