The Indian government has asked states to gear up for development of self-help groups (SHG) under the Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojna and involve SHG promotion agencies on large scale.
Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh reviewed the performance of implementation of Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojna under which budgetary allocation of Rs 1000 crore has been made during the current year.
First installment has been released to almost all districts except a few.About 22 lakh self help groups have been formed in all states.Despite the formation of the SHGs the number of them passing Grade I and grade II are substantially low and those which get ultimate financial linkages are still low.
Ten per cent of the funds available at the district level are for skill upgrade training. It has been decided that in the current year, district wise potential should be identified and intensify training with a view to ensure self employment of trainees.
The Ministry has also devised a software to obtain regular monthly reports through online reporting system. About 450 districts have established linkages with the ministry on this so far. It has been instructed to ensure connectivity with remaining districts by the end of September 2005.
The Ministry has also taken steps to identify poor performing bank branches through the system of online reporting. This exercise is expected to be more focussed and is likely to ensure quality in implementation of the programme.
