Over 300 media professionals from all over the world will gather on 1-3 October 2005 in Amman, Jordan, at the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) to discuss challenges and opportunities facing the media development sector.
A steering committee, representing 20 leading media development organisations, met in Bangkok, Thailand in October 2004 with the aim to foster the development of independent media around the world. Announced on World Press Freedom Day, on 3 May, the new entity, the Global Forum for Media Development, also announced its first international conference, to be held at the Dead Sea in Jordan in October 2005.
GFMD will provide an international forum for media assistance for NGOs to share best practices in the areas of training journalists, supporting broadcast stations, newspapers, and magazines, working for open and accessible Internet and telecommunications policies, and reforming media law.
GFMD also aims to convince policymakers and funders of the importance of supporting local, independent media. Finally, GFMD intends to establish standards in areas such as monitoring and evaluation, to guide media NGOs in their work.
