Namibia to be centre of internet phone technology

As the technological world perpetually evolves, Namibians are equally becoming more involved in sophisticated yet skillful ways of enhancing their communications with the outside world.

Testimony to this is the introduction of Voice-Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) that entails making a normal call via the internet connection.Skyphonics, as it is called, is a virtual internet phone service that is an affordable alternative to traditional telephone services across the world.

The president of Sky-Phonics, Daniel Oherein, says VoIP is becoming the future global communications medium across the world and is currently slowly but surely getting to replace the traditional ways of communicating.

"We are just waiting for legislation to be passed in parliament that would enable such businesses to operate in the country," he said. However, the trend is growing and Oherein hopes to make Namibia the headquarters of SkyPhonics once all the relevant issues are ironed out.

He added that this technology might sound complicated but in actual fact it is made simple by the fact there is no special modification that one needs except for a pair of headphones with a microphone and speakers.

Considering that its server is located in Florida, USA, it is cheaper for people calling from Namibia to other parts of the world using the gateways which are standard to transmit Voice-over Internet.

Given the importance of making information accessible to people, this is one way that Namibians would also be able to gain access to information they might need in their daily operations, and hence be able to compete at a global level.
