Owning a personal computer with a broadband internet connection just got cheaper. Soon, Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) subscribers will be able to buy a branded PC on equated monthly installments, which can either be paid directly to the bank or can form a part of the telephone bill.
BSNL has tied up with Xenitis and HCL Infosystems for broadband-enabled computers to its landline users. It is also in talks with other manufacturers to offer a range to its subscribers.
Under the scheme, an HCL PC that costs around Rs 17,000 will be available at an EMI of Rs 400 over four years. BSNL is also in talks with SBI and Union Bank of India and non-banking finance companies such as Bajaj Auto Finance for arranging loans. Curiously, the customer’s credit profile will be assessed on the basis of his track record in paying BSNL’s bills.
“Everything that the subscriber needs will be made available. The process will be as easy as buying any consumer durable,” a senior BSNL executive said.
“The deal will lead to markedly higher of PC adoption, especially in the non-metros,” said HCL Infosystems executive vice-president Rajinder Kumar.
