Colloquium on language technologies in Paris

A three-day Colloquium on Language Technologies starts on 14 September 2005 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
The event is organised by the University of Campinas (Brazil), with the support of Brazilian and French institutions, in the framework of the Year of Brazil in France. It will focus on two major themes:

Multilingualism in the digital world

The discussions under this topic will cover the actual state-of-the-art electronic discourse and will consider the presence and the absence of languages in the digital world. A dialogue on the enabling technological and logistical environment to ensure the development of local contents will be part of these debates.

Some key aspects related to the multilingualism, particularly in French- and Portuguese-speaking countries' policies, will be considered. Intellectual property and free software are also key elements on the agenda. As soon as one has (or does not have) access to his language in digital media, the possibility to produce and interpret the meaning in his/her own language, the questions of the intellectual property and the production of software are at stake.

Language technologies

This second topic will focus on language technologies in a broader sense. The following major questions will be discussed:

How to make linguistic analyses of digital data?
Which are the conditions of production of an electronic text?
Which are the conditions for reading?
Are there possibilities to organise the meaning?
