National Human Rights Commission's observations on Braille textbooks
Dr. Justice A S Anand, Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission (India), sought direct interventions from the State Governments for printing textbooks in Braille and fine-tune the distribution systems for ensuring timely reach of the braile books prescribed by the State Boards are made available to the visually challenged persons at the start of the academic sessions.
Few states – Orissa, Haryana, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra – have informed the Commission that the matter is being looked upon and necessary actions will be taken.
West Bengal has stated that the Mass Education Extension Department has taken adequate steps for printing textbooks for blind students. The state also has necessary infrastructure, with three Braille presses, for printing required number of books.
