On September 8, 2005, the EU/UNDP funded project “Enhancement of Living Standards in Karakalpakstan” organised a roundtable on micro financing and community participation.
Representatives from the UNDP Office in Uzbekistan and the UNDP Regional Office in Bratislava, ELS project staff in Karakalpakstan and Namangan international consultants, representatives of the Council of Ministers, the local Khokimiyats of the districts of Kegeliy, Shumanay and Karauzak, various line ministries, the Mahalla Committee, microfinance institutions, local NGOs as well as community people took part in the workshop.
The roundtable served as an opportunity to review the ELS project plans for the disbursement of grants to Daulet, the Business Women Association and Parwaz, three non government organizations who have been administering microcredits successfully in Karakalpakstan.
During the roundtable the participants discussed aspects of the regional development strategy for Karakalpakstan and reviewed a number of projects that the communities in three districts will implement with the financial assistance of the European Union and UNDP.
The representative of the UNDP Regional office in Bratislava made a presentation on western style agriculture enterprises and discussed with the participants the experiences of the European and Central Asian region.
The proposals for the disbursement of the grant schemes are posted on the ELS website for comments and review by all those interested. The ELS project plans to present the proposal for micro-credit disbursement (which includes an exit strategy) to the European Commission in Brussels by the end of September.
