At a cost of just 4 paise per litre, rural India can now have access to safe drinking water without the use of electricity.
A high-technology membrane filter, developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), can remove bacteria as well as viruses from water.
The technology, which is used in hand pump based units in villages without electricity, today came in for commendation from none other than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Dr Singh is elated that the new technology "combines innovation with concern for social equity and compassion." While speaking at the function organised here to give away the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for excellence in science and technology, the Prime Minister announced the details of the new pathbreaking technology.
His announcement came in the context of his call to the scientists to generate high technology, create wealth and prestige for India while also ensuring that this technology improves the lives of the poor.

Dr Singh also complimented the CSIR for some of their recent breakthroughs in advanced scientific areas that had the potential to meet the basic needs of the people.
