UNESCO Media and Gender Chair established at Chinese University
The first UNESCO Chair in Media and Gender in China was recently established at the Communication University of China (CUC). The Chair, held by Liu Liqun, aims at raising awareness on gender related issues in the media environment.
Producers of media programmes for mass audience here in China still lack gender awareness. The patterns and symbols used in representing women in mass media prove that prejudice and discrimination against women still exist, " says CUC President Liu Jinan.
The Chair is intended to empower girls and women through high quality media productions on women in China and through capacity building among media professionals, especially in disadvantaged regions.
The first chair holder is Liu Liqun, Dean of the School of International Communication and Director of the Media and Gender Institute. Ms Liu, author of a number of books on the role of women in Chinese society is off to a very active start planning for example a project establishing a multimedia and TV production centre for the development of women in Tibet.
Yasuyuki Aoshima, Head of UNESCOs Beijing Office hopes that this UNESCO Media and Gender Chair becomes a platform for UNESCO and all other partners concerned to launch national and international activities to further brighten up the Half of the Sky.
The CUC is the major higher education communication university in China featuring cutting-age digital TV and multimedia facilities. Until February 2005, the University lists 49% of women among its 827 full-time teachers. Over 60,000 CUC graduates work in television production, broadcasting and related media industries.
