Election drive goes high-tech in Gujarat

Gone are the days when political workers used to distribute to voters audio cassettes that contained appeals soliciting votes for their party .

With the BJP-versus-Congress battle on to conquer the fortress of the prestigious Ahmedabad municipal corporation, cellphones of the well-heeled residents have been refusing to stop ringing.

If MMSes showing Narendra Modi requesting the receiver to support the BJP candidate are the order of the day, Ahmedabadis in all the 129 wards of the city have been browned off by the SMSes from Congress contestants urging them to make him a lawmaker of their locality to solve their day-to-day problems.

Not just mobiles, the two main rivals, the BJP and the Congress, have even prepared gripping short films which are shown to selected influential groups in different areas to drive home their point. Theatres in posh colonies also screen slides depicting the various battle cries even as the campaigning in streets gradually turning cacophonic.
