The Space for Science project, an initiative to enhance scientific and technical cooperation between scientific communities in South-East Europe and the EU started with a kick-off meeting last week at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
The Space for Science project that was initiated by UNESCO is funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) within the framework of the reconstruction of scientific cooperation in South-East Europe.
The project benefits from a research framework in satellite technology to provide 20 scientific institutions of South-East Europe with connectivity via satellite network and a set of innovative two-way services:
sending files;
URL mirroring;
fast Internet;
user portal;
collaborative working;
video-conferencing;
business TV;
e-education off-line;
content management; and
file streaming.
The project is being implemented in collaboration with a team of European industry represented by Alcatel Alenia Space, C2 Consultants and IBM. The representatives of 20 scientific institutions of South-East Europe met with UNESCO and its partners to discuss the future activities and perspectives of the project.
The model of cooperation, using satellite technology, piloted by the representative institutions in South-East Europe is designed to offer a solid basis to scale-up to other regions in the world.
