The Maharashtra government, in its bid to bring internet to the hinterland and deliver services through the web, has decided to set up rural Internet kiosk-- e-Chavdi.
Minister of State for Employment and Self Employment Rana Jagjitsinh Patil said the government plans to set up 10,000 kiosks in three years. They will generate around 20,000 jobs immediately.
He said the kiosks will be financed through bank loans, proving a small subsidy on owner's contribution. Each kiosk is expected to cost around Rs 75,000 including personal computer, printer, digital camera, scanner, fax and CTV and work as a self sustaining business unit.
Local educated youth with workable computer knowledge will run these e-kiosks as business enterprises. The kiosks will serve as a single point service delivery system for the rural populace.
He said prices of agricultural commodities, weather information, sale and purchases of agricultural inputs, reply to farmers' queries, information on ongoing rural development schemes and their beneficiaries, certificate and permits issued by the Revenue department, employment related information are proposed to be web delivered through the kiosks.
