Some of the best practices from libraries worldwide serving as public access points to networked information will be presented at Libraries the Information Society in Action, a conference organised by IFLA with UNESCOs support in Alexandria, Egypt, from 10 to 11 November 2005.
With libraries and information services, societies have a ready tool to further the Information Society and achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals. Upgrading this information commons will enable all people to seek and impart information.
Libraries throughout the world provide citizens with public access to networked information. With the adopting of emerging technologies, libraries seek to facilitate information retrieval more thoroughly, effectively and attractively.
The pre-conference is organised by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) in co-operation with Bibliotheca Alexandrina. It will present some of the best practices from libraries around the world in the areas of health, education and training, media literacy, preserving of cultural heritage and disaster preparedness.
The organisers of the event, a pre-conference to the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society WSIS, want to make visible the potential of the libraries in fulfilling the goals of the WSIS.
