The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the establishment of an Early Warning System for mitigation of Oceanogenic Disasters like Tsunami and Storm Surges in the Indian Ocean at an estimated cost of Rs 125 crore.
The CCEA also gave its approval for setting up Early Waring Centre in Hyderabad at the Indian National Oceanic Information Services (INCOIS)--an autonomous institute under the Depatment of Ocean Development.
The project is likely to be operational by September 2007.
The dual use, scientifically and technically sound Early Warning System for Tsunami and Storm Surges and an Operatonal National Early Warning Centre, functioning round the clock, wold enable generation and issue of timely and reliable waring and watch advisories on Tsunami, Storm Surges, Storm and Tsunami Vulnerability Map.
