Ghana records fastest growth in telecommunication sector in Africa

The telecommunications industry in Ghana has been described as one of the fastest growing on the African continent, as significant milestones have been achieved recently.

According to the minister of communication, Mr. Albert Kan Dapaah, capital inflows into the telecommunication industry by the end of the year, would be well over ¢3 trillion, compared to ¢2.9 trillion in 2004 and 2.4 trillion in 2003.

Apart from the inflows, the number of telephone lines has increased significantly from 218,000 in 2000 to 1 million in 2003 and 1.6 million in 2004. Currently, the number of telephone lines in the country is estimated to be 2.3 million in the country.

The penetration of telephones also increased to 10% and 25% in the rural and urban areas respectively.Minister Dapaah noted that government would still provide the environment for more investment to come.

"Ghana would become the fastest growing telecommunication industry in Africa if Kasapa is able to cover the whole of Ghana by next June," the minister said.

On his part, the Managing Director of Kasapa, Mr. Robert Palitz announced that Kasapa would extend coverage to seven regions by the end of the year and ten by June next year and paid tribute to the Ministry of Communications, the National Communications Authority and the staff of Kasapa for their role in the success of the digitalization of Kasapa.

The minister later launched the leap of Kasapa into a Code-Division Multiple Access(CDMA) service.Kasapa had announced earlier this year that it would go digital with CDMA technology.
