Communication and information on agenda of UNESCO’s General Conference

UNESCO’s Member States will be discussing the organisation’s future activities related to communication and information including UNESCO’s contribution to the World Summit on the Information Society.

The three-day debates, to be held from 11 to 13 October at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris under the chair of Mohammed S. Sheya from Tanzania, form part of the work of the 33rd session of UNESCO’s General Conference.

Items on the agenda are the programme and budget for activities in the area of communication and information in the coming two years. The priority of the future programme proposed by UNESCO Director-General is the empowerment of people through access to information and knowledge with a special emphasis on freedom of expression.

Member States will also discuss the preparation of the Organisation’s strategy in communication and information for the period covered by the years 2008 to 2013, UNESCO’s so called “Medium-Term Strategy”.

Other items on the agenda include UNESCO's involvement in the process set in motion by the World Summit on the Information Society, the issue of media and good governance and the protection of the audiovisual heritage.

The 33rd session of UNESCO’s General Conference, a three week event bringing together representatives of all Member States of the Organisation every two years, opened on 1 October 2005. Chaired by Oman’s Musa Bin Jaafar Bin Hassan, it gathers more than 3000 delegates at UNESCO’s Headquarter in Paris to discuss the Organisation’s strategies, activities and budget in the areas of education, science, culture as well as communication and information.
