India has stepped into the latest technology of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) for disaster management, which would help scientists predict the gravity of natural calamities like floods and sea-surging activities.
General Manager, Aerial Services and Digital Mapping, National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), Department of Space, Government of India, Dr K Kalyanaraman said the new technology was introduced six months back, which was being targeted for extracting various disaster informations.
''Information about areas, which would be flooded can be known beforehand because LiDAR can accurately ascertain the terrain of the ground,'' he claimed.
It could also help in advance information about coastal areas, likely to be affected by disasters. ''This can save the life and property of people.'' Dr Kalyanaraman said LiDAR was cost and time effective technology and mainly used for mapping.
''The forest terrain and timber volume could be analysed through this technology. Besides, it would also be useful in pipeline and electric power line surveys,'' he informed.
