Katha Information Technology and E-commerce School (KITES), a non-conventional school located in the heart of New Delhis large slum area, Govindpuri, offers information and communication (ICT) training to children from the local community and aims to provide these children with skills that will help them to find employment.
Over 1,200 children currently attend KITES, which was founded by Delhi-based non-governmental organization (NGO) Katha four years ago. Katha has been working for 15 years with the urban poor in Delhi, India, focussing on women and children, particularly those who have either never attended school or who have dropped out.
Several Information Technology (IT) companies have assisted in enabling Katha to reach these children. By supplying computers and other equipment, these IT companies have contributed to bridging the digital divide between the haves and have-nots, and to breaking the spiral of poverty and improving the quality of life of underprivileged children.
Aside from offering access to ICT and employment-related training, KITES encourages children to attend school by decreasing the monthly fee of Rs100 (approximately US$2.25) in proportion with such things as the regularity of attendance and the frequency with which their parents come to parent-teacher meetings.
