Beginning next year, the Ministry of Interior, UAE will start issuing electronic passports a move that is the first of its kind in the region.
This was announced by Colonel Ahmed Nasser El Rayee, Director of the Information Technology Department in Abu Dhabi Police and Deputy Chairman of the Technical Committee charged with the issue of ePassports.
Stating that the International Organisation for Electronic Documents had urged all the countries to switch over to ePassports by 2007, he said this had led to the formation of the committee to work on this aspect.
Colonel Al Raysy said the ministry had floated a tender for the implementation of the electronic passport project. The Technical Committee was now studying the bids presented by international majors in the field to select the best among them. "The committee is in an advanced stage of selection and subsequent signing of the contract with the chosen company," he said.
