SHG women trained to open information kiosk

The Mookambigai College of Engineering, Kalamavur in Pudukottai district, and Anna University in Chennai jointly organised a 12-day programme to train self-help group women to establish information kiosks on college premises.

Project officer of Mahalir Thittam R. Subbiah inaugurated the training programme. The assistant project officer of Mahalir Thittam, V. Pannirselvam, threw light on the services done through various projects to empower the economic conditions of the SHG members.Twenty-five women, all members of various SHGs, were trained in MS-Office programmes, Internet operations, maintaining computers etc.

The Department of Social and Women Empowerment Wing of the J.J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai, organised a day-long awareness programme on `alcoholism' at Melathumuthupatty recently. Bharathi Mohan and Ravikumar, both from the Khajamalai Ladies Association, Tiruchi, were the resource persons and they called upon the people to avoid consuming alcohol.

They also explained the role played by de-addiction centres.

The Department of Biotechnology and Microbiology of the Srinivasan College of Arts and Science, Perambalur, organised a seminar on `Emerging Trends in Biosciences' recently. S. Sankaran, dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Arts and Science for Women, motivated the students with new ideas in the relevant fields.

The dean of the research and development wing of the college, who was the chief guest, underlined the importance of quality education to improve research and development.

In connection with the golden jubilee celebration of Sri AVVM Pushpam College at Poondi near Thanjavur, the medicinal plants research unit of the Department of Botany and Microbiology organised a state-level seminar on `herbal technology' recently.

An exhibition of more than 100 rare medicinal plants was organised in connection with the seminar at the college. More than 200 students and research scholars of Bharathidasan University from various colleges participated in the seminar.

Different kinds of herbal soups were prepared and served to the participants. S. Balu, principal of the college, spoke about the medicinal effect of herbs.
