IOM Harare has launched a nationwide multimedia information campaign aimed at reducing the risks linked to irregular migration and HIV/AIDS.
The Safe Journey campaign, funded by the UKs Department of International Development and is implemented in partnership with Zimbabwes Ministry of Immigration and with the support of other Government Departments, aims to encourage potential migrants to make informed choices when they consider emigrating and to increase public awareness on the risks of irregular migration and the vulnerability of migrants to HIV/AIDS.
The six-month information campaign uses a variety of multimedia messages, including radio and television programmes featuring migrants testimonies, billboards and posters in Shona, Ndebele and English and the distribution of an IOM developed Passport to Safe Migration, a booklet which includes hard facts on the dangers of irregular migration and on avenues for legal migration.
Safe Journey has also enlisted the support of some of Zimbabwes biggest musical stars, such as Tuku, Pastor G, Plaxedes and others who have recorded a CD, which will be distributed to mobile group potentially at risk, such as truck drivers, informal traders and communities living in major transit areas and border towns such as Chirundu, Beitbridge, Nyamapanda, Plumtree and Machipanda.
