Communicating the importance of setting up community radio

R.S. Baskkaran, senior lecturer, Periyar Centenary Polytechnic College, Vallam in Chennai was awarded the `Best Polytechnic Teacher Award' for 2005 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the polytechnic education system.

Of 300 technical papers submitted at the convention from various polytechnics and engineering colleges, five papers were prepared and presented by members of the faculty of Periyar Centenary Polytechnic College.

S. Arul Selvan, lecturer, Department of Communication, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, delivered a special lecture on `community radio experiments in India.

He explained the philosophy behind the concept of community radios, run by the people for the people and on behalf of the people. Community radios generally reflected the people's issues in their own dialect and are run by non-profit organisations.

Dr. Arul Selvan said that setting up a community radio station did not cost a lot. They are widely accepted by the Srilankan and Nepalese communities, whereas the experiment is yet to start in the country. Anna FM, started by Anna University, is the first campus radio in India.

The Rotaract Club of the college has adopted Ranganathapuram village. The club has planned to organise camps and awareness programmes in the village and a planning meet was held in this regard recently. Members of the club visited the village and spoke to the president of the village panchayat, Chinnasamy, and the other ward members there.

The PG Physics Department of the college also organised a four-day in-service training programme for postgraduate physics teachers. Topics introduced in the Plus Two syllabus were discussed at the programme, which was sponsored by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology and NCSTC, New Delhi.
