India's national portal india.gov.in that provides one-stop access to information and services being provided by the government was launched in Delhi by Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran.
Developed by the National Informatics Centre and Department of Information Technology, the portal is a mission mode project under the national e-governance plan (2003-07) that seeks to lay the foundation and provide the impetus for long-term growth of e-governance in the country.
The plan aims at creating the right governance and institutional mechanisms at the central, state and integrated service levels to create a citizen-centric and business-centric environment for governance.
Laid out in a colour-coordinated and viewer-friendly style, the portal has on its left, sections on the government and the country as well as sectors like agriculture, commerce, communications, defence, education and rural development.
Spread across the top are sections on India's citizens and the business opportunities available here, as also a box titled Overseas that is targeted at non-resident Indians, people of Indian origin and foreigners contemplating a visit to India.
This section also has details of Indian missions across the globe, of foreign missions in India and on the educational opportunities available here.
In the centre is a section titled Spotlight and this, too, is on the Right to Information Act.
There are also comprehensive sections on directories, government documents like the budget, forms of central and state governments, maps and tenders.
