Thimphu residents seeking preventive and rehabilitative health services could visit the Health Information and Service Centre, the first one in the country, which opened in Thimphu town on October 31.
The centre will provide counselling services on family planning, substance and alcohol abuse, tobacco control and mental stress and information on sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS, according to health officials.
To be manned by two trained counselors, the centre will also provide check ups for hepatitis, STI, HIV and distribute free contraceptives.
The public health care services and information will be brought nearer to the people who are vulnerable to various lifestyle related problems, psycho-social problems and other infectious sexual diseases, he said. We expect even the healthy people to visit the centre for health information and services to prevent them from getting diseases and infections.
According to the programme coordinator, Dr. Gampo Dorji, the counseling services provided through this centre should help them to get timely assistance and save them from the dangers.
It would be dealt in a friendly atmosphere and the details of the clients would be maintained with total respect and confidentiality, he said adding that if the treatment were necessary, they would be referred to the hospital.
The ministry had worked for more than a year with support from World Bank to come out with the health information centre, which was inaugurated by the Health Minister Lyonpo Jigme Singay on October 31.
