Ahmedabad NGO to put in place 24-hour helpline for women

Ramilaben Patel from Kheda district had a tough time lodging a complaint against her husband at the local police station recently. Her husband was forcing her to take a divorce. A mother of a four-year-old boy, Ramilaben was being harassed for months.

To help women like Ramilaben, MVG will soon launch a 24-hour helpline. The helpline will enable women facing harassment in family to seek advice from MVG volunteers over telephone.

According to MVG secretary Dr Damyantiben Bhatt women in rural areas easily fall prey to the harassment by their husbands and in-laws. Besides the helpline, the NGO will put in place volunteers in different districts, who can rush to the needy and provide help. Till now, it has formed more than 70 groups across the State.

Bhatt says the helpline would also help them to counsel those women who want solution to the problems related to marriage or health.
