Anna University of Tamil Nadu to set up a digital library

Anna University has sought the assistance of the Indian Institute of Technology to help the varsity set up a full fledged digital library, according to K. Nithyanandam, Director, Central Library, Anna University.

The University has also submitted a second proposal to the All India Council for Technical Education in order to get funds for digitisation.

Speaking at a seminar on `Information requirements of today's library user,' at the B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering College at Vandalur on Saturday, he said Anna University at present had 50 computers in its library and needed at least 50 more.

He said digital libraries were of immense benefit to students, researchers and staff as huge volumes of information could be accessed in no time. At the Anna University, faculty members had access to information in the library through desktops from their rooms without having to go to the library.

This would eliminate the requirement of personnel to man libraries as visitors to the library could borrow books and other sources even in the absence of staff, he added.

V.M. Periasamy, Principal, Crescent Engineering College, said libraries were knowledge centres and urged librarians to impress upon the college managements the need to develop and improve them.
