IT programme to uplift villagers in Tamil Nadu

The district administration of salem , Tamil Nadu has organised a training programme, `Building skills of the self-help group (SHG) women in establishing information kiosks' at the Sona College of Technology.

Inaugurating the programme, the Project Officer of Mahalir Thittam, R. Saroja said the 12-day training programme was aimed at developing the socio-economic conditions of the rural areas through information technology. It would help SHG women learn the basics in computer such as word processing, computerised accounting, image manipulation, page making and the internet.

After successful completion of training, the State Government would extend loans with subsidy to the women to set up kiosks at their village.

These kiosks would provide information on weather, farm technologies, market trends, cropping seasons, examination schedules and railway timings to the villagers.

Students in the rural areas could learn subjects through compact disc tutorials, apply for registration to the District Employment Exchange and download application forms for various entrance examinations through these kiosks. Besides, these information centres would throw open a number of opportunities for the SHG members to generate income.

In Namakkal district, a similar training programme for SHG women was held at the K.S.R. College of Technology in Tiruchengode.
