DO Channel familiarisation at WSIS

What makes DO Channel different from others? How do you think you can contribute to the portal? How do you think that website can promote ICTs in development in a better way? These are the some of the key questions that were raised and answered at the BCO Souk today at the Digital Opportunity Channel familiarisation and community engagement programme hosted at the BCO Souk in the WSIS II, Tunis.

Participants from IDRC, wire.less.dk, Tacticalteh, Bellanet, APC, Panos and several other organisations joined this highly interactive event. It was started with a brief demonstration of DO Channel and later on participants are asked to provide their opinions on various aspects of the Channel.

A major issue raised by the participants was the availability of French and Spanish versions of the Channel. Participants from Africa and Latin America felt that this portal is resource intensive, but at the same time making the portal multi-lingual helps may non-English speakers in benefiting from the site.

The issue of content aggregation and dissemination was also raised – Marek Tuszynski of Tecticaltech suggested RSS feed be incorporated in the Channel so that content can be distributed to a large audience through email and RSS feed.

Use of advance search facility is unique in this portal, as it gives the audience an option to search the portal using a wide variety of keywords. Thematic and geographical focus of the content allows the visitors to easily navigate through the content.

Participants have been very keen to be engaged in the Channel’s works as it becomes more dynamic and adaptive to the partners’ needs.
